Sambal is the must have condiment in Malaysia. There are many variations of sambal. Preference is very subjective as such comparison between one sambal to the other is almost immaterial. One would need to keep up with the different varieties of sambal. Having said that the combination of chili with other aromatics such as shallots, garlic, ginger, ginger torch, lemongrass, calamansi and umami from dried shrimp paste or vegan belacan are the essential ingredients to one of a kind “hot sauce”!
The sambals we offer at the Bukit Piton Orangutan Project Shop are from Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen. The sambal ingredients for Hawa’s Artisan Kitchen are sourced in the most sustainable way possible from local suppliers in Sabah that strive for good farming practices. All these ingredients are handwashed, peeled and cooked with much love over extended long hours to ensure that you get that home cooked sambal in your own home!
